"worked for 3-4 days" 2010-03-21
By yak driver (pennsylvania)
I've had the radon detector for about a month. Didn't set it up right away--you know, quick shipping and then let it sit for a week or so. Anyway, initial reading of 2.5 corresponded well with my "send-in" kits. Then, "error message". Went through the manual to clear and reset. Then in a few days: "E,E,E,E", handbook silent on that one. Cleared OK, though. Then "8,8,8,8"--cleared OK. Then, "8.8.8.5"... That was today. Window to return to Amazon "closed 3/18". Have to get an RA number from the company and send it back "postage prepaid" (I think that means by me). Haven't had anything fail right out of the box in a long time. Hope this one is a fluke.

"I recommend highly!" 2010-03-21

I bought 2 of these because I did not trust the accuracy and I figured with 2 I could see if they gave the same reading. To my surprise, they did within less then 1. My basement is slightly higher then it should be (rangers from 4 to 8 depending on the weather) so I put one at my daughters house because she had a new baby and was concerned. It read 26! I then brought the second one over and the same thing. She had a radon company come in and they said it was correct. She had a Radon system put in and now is always less then 1. I keep one at her house in and one at mine and we both feel much better always knowing what we cannot see. I guess its time to try there carbon monoxide detector also it they have one.

"I will now live a long prosperous life...." 2010-03-16

I bought this Radon detector on a hunch. I thought it would be nice to know what our basement readings would be over time. I read Radon levels can change with the seasons, and a digital meter would be better than sending in the "one time" spot tests. I was utterly shocked to find our readings were 7 times what was deemed safe. We have just invested 150k $ in a remodel to our 1914 Craftsman and planned to live here a long time. I never would have dreamed we have a problem.I spent 129 bucks on this unit which probably extended my life...and,saved my entire family's lungs from cancer....Once we get our house mitigated all my nieghbors want to borrow it to test their basements...

Potentially this unit could save our nieghbors as well.

Was it worth it?

Yeah!!!!!. what is a 129 bucks for my life ?

I can't say how pleased I am. (I'm going to be around to review lots more stuff now.)

"Highly inaccurate" 2010-03-16
By Royce O. Dahl (Minnetonka, MN)
The electronic tester showed a level of 9.4 to 10.3, and based on this I contracted mitigation with a contractor that guaranteed to reduce the level below 2.0. After mitigation the electronic tester showed levels of 3.1 to 3.8. The contractor supplied charcoal testers that showed the level to be 0.5. I purchased another charcoal tester that showed the level as 0.7. I then returned the electronic tester, then tested with an additional charcoal tester and the mitigation system off, which showed the pre-mitigation level as 4.9. Based on the pre-mitigation level of 4.9, I would still have contracted mitigation, but the electronic tester proved unreliable.

"Works as Advertised" 2010-03-05

I have used this device for about a month now and am impressed. It has enabled me to test the radon levels in several areas of my home and has provided the necessary information for a decision on whether or not to purchase a mitigation system. I cannot be sure that it is 100% accurate, of course, but my readings are in line with neighbors and friends who live in this area, which is known to have high average levels of radon in the soil. I will probably proceed with installation of a mitigation system since the levels in my home range from 4.9 pCi/L in the Master Bedroom to 11.5 pCi/L in the unfinished basement. Fortunately, the levels in my home are lower than my nearby neighbors (one of whom had a test that measured nearly 40 pCi/L!). My only complaint about the device is that there is no way to silence the hourly "beep" (which is to notify you that a new reading has been calculated) - it's loud enough to wake a light sleeper like me if the device is placed in the bedroom.
