Product Description

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert CO400 carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The permanent sensor lasts up to five years. It is powered by two AA replaceable alkaline batteries giving you peace of mind even during power outages. The test/silence button both silences the alarm and allows you to test its functionality. The unit monitors and re-alarms if carbon monoxide levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. An audible and visual low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery. Pull down action chart has convenient guide on what to do if an alarm sounds. 5 year limited warranty. "Compact, easy to install" 2010-02-05

Placed one on each floor, near our bedrooms. They were easy to mount, and seem to work, batts are included. Small price for piece of mind.

"Cheaply Made" 2009-12-30
By S. Quinn (Boston, MA USA)
The First Alert CO400 model battery powered carbon monoxide alarm is cheaply made. Installed in my apartment a little over a year ago by the seller when I purchased it, the alarm was new, and I haven't had any reason to so much as glance at the device.

However while trying to determine which device was making sounds indicating it needed a new battery, I turned my attention to the First Alert alarm. I pressed in the dual-purpose button in the center on the top to test the product and the alarm began to sound. Immediately, realizing this was not the device in trouble I went to silence the alarm by pressing on the lower half of the same button. I applied hardly any pressure but--and I can only assume this--the plastic arm on the inside of the alarm used to apply pressure to the internal buttons snapped and I was left with a useless alarm.

I'm not sure how First Alert's other products are built, but you get what you pay for.

If looking at First Alert's products, I would not recommend this alarm, I'm sure they sell higher quality products for a little more money.

"No alarms yet!" 2009-12-04
By Eric Neff (Kalamazoo, MI)
These seem like nice detectors. I put one on each level for added protection. There are some limitations on placement such as further than 5' from any cooking appliance, 20' from any gas burning appliance, etc. But, after figuring that out, mounting them was easy.

"Read the fine print" 2009-05-20
By Cecil Fraser (Lake Forest, CA United States)
I purchased this device to measure carbon monoxide on my sailboat. Nowhere in the description of the product does it state that it is not suitable for marine use. Upon receipt, the instructions specify that it is not for marine use. In addition, I wanted to know if it actually responded to carbon monoxide, so I intended to put it in the garage with my car running. Whoops, you cannot do that either. It has a notice that says that if you try testing the device as I intended, it will void the warranty.

Now, do you think I should use this in my boat to protect my family?

Probably not.

"Simple to install" 2009-05-14
By Florida girl (MA)
I bought 2 because new regulations in my state require one within 10 feet of each bedroom and I'd only had one on the first floor before. Good price, easy to install.

The price was excellent - no frills.

"First Alert Carbon Monoxide Detector" 2009-12-23
By Robert Welch (Cape Cod, MA)
This is the third different model of First Alert Carbon Monoxide Detector which I have purchased. I have never bought anything but First Alert Detectors over the several years I have owned my homes. There has never been a problem with any of them.I chose to purchase the plug-in model since I only have an oil burner which could produce carbon monoxide. I figured that if the power was out, the oil burner would automatically be out as well. Since I do not have a wood stove or other heating or cooking source of monoxide which may operate without electricity, I did not feel I would need the battery back-up feature. The only factor which should be reviewed prior to purchasing this model is the status of any state or local ordinance for monoxide detectors. I have noticed that certain states/cities require a battery back-up model in every case. I did see that First Alert offers this model for about $8.00 more.

"NOTE: DOES NOT COMPLY WITH NEW COLORADO LAW" 2009-07-09
By D. Graham (Denver, CO)
I just ordered this item for a rental unit and was informed by my property manager that this specific model does NOT comply with Colorado law, which requires plug-in units to have a battery back-up. If you are ordering in this to comply with new state regulations, make sure you are buying the right model. I've asked Amazon to note it on the website, but thought I'd just alert everyone in the mean time.

"worked for 3-4 days" 2010-03-21
By yak driver (pennsylvania)
I've had the radon detector for about a month. Didn't set it up right away--you know, quick shipping and then let it sit for a week or so. Anyway, initial reading of 2.5 corresponded well with my "send-in" kits. Then, "error message". Went through the manual to clear and reset. Then in a few days: "E,E,E,E", handbook silent on that one. Cleared OK, though. Then "8,8,8,8"--cleared OK. Then, "8.8.8.5"... That was today. Window to return to Amazon "closed 3/18". Have to get an RA number from the company and send it back "postage prepaid" (I think that means by me). Haven't had anything fail right out of the box in a long time. Hope this one is a fluke.

"I recommend highly!" 2010-03-21
By Leojdpa (lehighton, pa, US)
I bought 2 of these because I did not trust the accuracy and I figured with 2 I could see if they gave the same reading. To my surprise, they did within less then 1. My basement is slightly higher then it should be (rangers from 4 to 8 depending on the weather) so I put one at my daughters house because she had a new baby and was concerned. It read 26! I then brought the second one over and the same thing. She had a radon company come in and they said it was correct. She had a Radon system put in and now is always less then 1. I keep one at her house in and one at mine and we both feel much better always knowing what we cannot see. I guess its time to try there carbon monoxide detector also it they have one.

"I will now live a long prosperous life...." 2010-03-16
By Mark Hatten (Portland)
I bought this Radon detector on a hunch. I thought it would be nice to know what our basement readings would be over time. I read Radon levels can change with the seasons, and a digital meter would be better than sending in the "one time" spot tests. I was utterly shocked to find our readings were 7 times what was deemed safe. We have just invested 150k $ in a remodel to our 1914 Craftsman and planned to live here a long time. I never would have dreamed we have a problem.I spent 129 bucks on this unit which probably extended my life...and,saved my entire family's lungs from cancer....Once we get our house mitigated all my nieghbors want to borrow it to test their basements...

Potentially this unit could save our nieghbors as well.

Was it worth it?

Yeah!!!!!. what is a 129 bucks for my life ?

I can't say how pleased I am. (I'm going to be around to review lots more stuff now.)

Mark, Portland Or.

"Highly inaccurate" 2010-03-16
By Royce O. Dahl (Minnetonka, MN)
The electronic tester showed a level of 9.4 to 10.3, and based on this I contracted mitigation with a contractor that guaranteed to reduce the level below 2.0. After mitigation the electronic tester showed levels of 3.1 to 3.8. The contractor supplied charcoal testers that showed the level to be 0.5. I purchased another charcoal tester that showed the level as 0.7. I then returned the electronic tester, then tested with an additional charcoal tester and the mitigation system off, which showed the pre-mitigation level as 4.9. Based on the pre-mitigation level of 4.9, I would still have contracted mitigation, but the electronic tester proved unreliable.

"Works as Advertised" 2010-03-05
By David Vincent
I have used this device for about a month now and am impressed. It has enabled me to test the radon levels in several areas of my home and has provided the necessary information for a decision on whether or not to purchase a mitigation system. I cannot be sure that it is 100% accurate, of course, but my readings are in line with neighbors and friends who live in this area, which is known to have high average levels of radon in the soil. I will probably proceed with installation of a mitigation system since the levels in my home range from 4.9 pCi/L in the Master Bedroom to 11.5 pCi/L in the unfinished basement. Fortunately, the levels in my home are lower than my nearby neighbors (one of whom had a test that measured nearly 40 pCi/L!). My only complaint about the device is that there is no way to silence the hourly "beep" (which is to notify you that a new reading has been calculated) - it's loud enough to wake a light sleeper like me if the device is placed in the bedroom.

"So far so good..." 2010-03-20
By RoboTech (Tecumseh, MI United States)
I have had this unit 2 months now. (Purchase: January 2010) I obtained it for an efficiency apartment that has a Williams 20000 BTU Hearth Vented Heater. Sq Footage is approx. 475 for this two room efficiency. I rent this apt. to college students and wanted to make sure the new heater setup was safe. I followed code in the install and venting, but since CO is colorless and odorless; I do not take chances with silent killers. (e.g. CO, Radon, High Blood Pressure, etc.)

So far ( 2mos.) the unit is performing well and no battery issues. My readings at different four different points in the apt., including 12 inches from the heater vent were all Zero. Peak readings also never rose above zero. I began to wonder if I had a defective unit, or just super safe air.So I experimented...

I placed the CO Detector in my garage, closed the door and you guessed it...ran a vehicle. Within 5 minutes the detector started reading CO Gas. 17, 44, 76, 116, 220. After another 4 minutes and 17 seconds, the unit started screaming bloody murder. I turned off the vehicle opened the big door to the garage and took the unit outside (battery back up took over) for fresh air till the reading went back to zero. I then returned the unit to the garage with the bay door open and plugged it in again. The readings gradually rose back to 58, then over time fell; eventually back to zero as the residual CO was dissipating.Infer what you want from this data. Me, I like the unit.I will update this review after the Duracell battery runs down, giving the battery life as a back up all the while being plugged in. I will also indicate any power failures during that test period. The test continues...

"May have saved my family from a tragedy" 2010-02-09
By Dan Billings (Louisville, Kentucky)
This device detects low level CO. The reading was dead on the levels measured by our fire department. How do I know? While on a weekend trip with some of my buddies, this thing alerted my wife that there was a leak at home. She called the fire department when both of our meters, upstairs and downstairs, began to sound the alarm. When they arrived, they used a fancy detector with a probe to locate the source of the problem. The exhaust duct from our water heater in the cellar had separated at an elbow, causing the gas to leak outside of the chimney and up through the floor. The fire fighters measured the gas levels around our detectors, and the measurements were consistent, before and after they reconnected the duct. There was never any odor or sign of a problem other than our Kiddie alarms. The level of CO was over 250PPM when the fire department arrived. That is high enough to do serious harm. What a life saver! I now have a total of four detectors, and I sleep better for it.

THIS ITEM CAME IN WITH AN EXPIRED BATTERY . IT WORKED FOR ONE WEEK AND STARTED BEEPING LOW BATTERY. I CONTACTED AMAZON TWICE AND NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY. I THINK THAT THIS ITEM, CO DETECTOR, WHICH WORKS ON BATTERY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DELIVERED WITH A BATTERY THAT WORKED FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR NOT ONE WEEK . I HAD PURCHASED THIS ITEM BEFOR FROM A STORE AND HAD NO COMPLAINTS. I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMEND THAT THIS CO DETECTOR NOT BE PURCHASED FROM AMAZON.

"First Alert CO615 Carbon Monoxide Detector" 2010-03-04
By Richard J. Simons (Brookfield, WI)
Purchased three of these so I now have one on each floor of our home. We had one on the second floor, where the bedrooms are located, and it was over 10 years old and I just learned they are to be replaced every 5 years. I put a label on each of the new ones indicating the date on which to replace them. I used them by just plugging them,. They come with an extension cord but had no need for it. I guess they are working, I haven't had them sound or register any reading of carbon monoxide. I did use the test button and they sounded, so they say they are working properly. Purchased one more unit to take to our trailer at the vacation park, so we are protected where ever we are staying. The State of Wisconsin just enacted a law requiring these on each floor of a residence, but interestingly there is no penalty for failing to install them. Maybe some people will get them because of the law and it will save someones life. The penalty is if you don't have them and there is a problem you could pay for it with your life.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm combines two important safety devices into a single unit. This alarm includes a voice warning system that announces "Fire, Carbon Monoxide, Low Battery, or Smart Hush Activation." The voice alarm eliminates any confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide danger, or if your battery is in need of replacement. This unit uses three AA batteries, protecting you and your family even during a power outage.
This alarm uses ionization sensing technology for the smoke alarm. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.

Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Smoke and CO Alarm

    • Employs both smoke and carbon monoxide sensors.
    • Stand-alone battery operated alarm is easy to install throughout the home, as no wiring is needed.
    • Features a hush button to silence the alarm for non-emergency situations like a smoky dinner.
    • Voice alarm eliminates confusion and clearly warns of smoke/CO danger or low battery.

    Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm
The Kidde Combination Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarm includes a voice warning system that eliminates confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) danger, or if your battery is in need of replacement or your alarm is in hush mode.
    Alarm Warnings
Fire: The red LED will flash and be accompanied by three long alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning message "Fire! Fire!" The alarm will repeat the pattern until smoke is eliminated. View movie showing voice warning
Carbon Monoxide: Four short alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning "Warning! Carbon Monoxide!" This continues until the unit is reset or the CO is eliminated. View movie showing voice warning
Low Battery: One chirp followed by warning "Low Battery." The red LED light will flash. This pattern will continue every minute for the first hour. After the first hour, the red LED light will flash once every minute and will be accompanied by the chirp sound. The "Low Battery" warning will only sound once every fifteen minutes.
Voice Hush Indication: "Hush Activated" and "Hush Canceled" voice announcement.
Peak Level Memory: If the alarm had detected a CO level of 100ppm or higher when the Test/Reset button is pressed, the unit will announce "Carbon Monoxide Previously Detected" to warn of the CO incident.
    Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.
This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately 10 minutes. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately, the unit will verbally announce "Hush Mode Activated", and the green LED will flash every 2 seconds for approximately 10 minutes.
Reliable Battery Power, Indicator LED, Test Feature and Low-Battery Warning
The battery powered alarm provides continuous protection, even during power outages. Because this alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm also contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.
If any form of battery failure is detected the red LED light will flash and the unit will "chirp" one time, followed by the warning message "Low Battery." This cycle will occur once every minute, and will continue for at least seven days.
Seven (7) years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every 30 seconds. This is an "operational end of life" feature which will indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. UL 2034, the independent standard applicable to CO alarms, requires CO alarms to have an end of life warning. This requirement went into effect in March 2007, meaning any CO alarm manufactured after April 2007 with a UL listing must have this feature. Most states that require CO alarms in residential dwellings mandate that the alarm meet the UL 2034 standard.
The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.7 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It includes tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft. This combination smoke/CO alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

    "Very good" 2010-03-15
By Floyd Donald Newkirk (Va Beach, Va)
I purchased this as a replacement. I had a very good experience with the old one so I wanted the same kind & model. Your time table for us receiving it was surpassed and it arrived about 3 days before we were told it would arrive. This was a very good experience.

Thankfully I've not needed. With gas heat, just didn't want to take a chance of NOT waking up one morning, as I understand you are asleep before anyone uncovers a leak. Prevention is always best practice!

"It was time to replace my old detector or die" 2010-03-14
By Michael G. Lustig (NJ USA)
Two times in the last year I had potentially life-threatening fires. My house was full of smoke and my old detector didn't go off. Fortunately I was awake both times and dealt with the problems promptly with no loss of life or fire damage.

After the second time my old detector didn't alert me; I had to take action. The Kidde seemed like a good choice because it has several features I like:
    * Hard-wired with battery backup.
    * It sets of the other smoke detectors in the event of a fire or CO problem.
    * Ionizing smoke detector is state-of-the-art.
    * It talks and beeps.
    * It uses inexpensive AA Batteries

For the life of me, I can't understand why the local building code only requires one smoke detector on the first floor so I bought this as added protection. I also bought a KN-COB-IC, Kidde 120V Hardwired Nighthawk Interconnectable Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup to replace the defective smoke detector. My review for that product is pretty-much the same except it uses an expensive 9V battery instead of the AA batteries this one uses.

Purchased three of these a week ago to replace old smoke-only alarm w/9-volt battery. The AA-battery is a big plus, since this size is almost universal in electronic devices. Installation was easy, however, there was a discrepancy on which screw holes to use for mounting, but this was rectified with a call to customer service.(Mount as shown on p. #15 of instruction book.) Also, you do NOT have to use tamper-resistant feature to install. (This option is for use in public areas, access by children etc.) Product-life is two (2) years greater than comparable First Alert model & it has an LED light showing it's "working properly" [not available on First Alert.]
If you're a NY State resident, it is now a law that homes w/fuel-burning furnaces etc. must have a CO alarm. This combo alarm is the answer.

    "Bang for the buck" 2010-03-20

No issues so far with this unit. I like the digital readout, and that it can be wall-mounted or stand alone like a picture frame on a desk or shelf. We have ours on a desk behind a picture, but still within our site. Could not beat the price found on Amazon.

    "Nifty CO monitor" 2010-03-20
    By M. Newman (NJ)
I bought this to monitor CO in my home. It came quickly and had free shipping. It came with the batteries it needed it seems pretty sturdy. The instructions are straightforward and easy to understand. I just popped open the case, put the batteries in and set it in my hallway table with it's little stand (like a picture frame). It looks nice and I like that it has a display so you know how much CO there is...not simply an alarm. I look at it every time I walk by and it gives me peace of mind.

"Works fine, needs better mounting option" 2010-03-19
By Just a guy (Westchester, NY)
This is probably the best value for an CO detector that actually has a digital read out for the PPM of CO gas detected. Having the readout is important so you can differentiate between a low alarm (maybe <100 ppm) from baking and something more serious (>400 ppm). The unit I received in March 2010 is the one with the squarish buttons - not the newer round button unit that is also sold through this same amazon page.
I am very handy around the house - I redid my own bathroom down to the studs. This was not difficult to mount, but it could have been much easier. It uses two keyholes on the back. There is no template provided and - unlike most smoke detectors - the mounting plate does not detach from the unit. Thus, there is much measuring and leveling to do it right. Ours is wall mounted next to the thermostat in the hall - away from the kitchen.

So far, no false alarms and the max reading/backlight button is a nice feature.

Uses 3 AA batteries - included - Duracell - nice.

It is and does exactly what it's supposed to and every house must have one in NY by law.

    "I'm happy with it" 2010-02-17
By Lisa BBBmom (Dallas, TX USA)
After recently learning that CO detectors need to be replaced after 5 years, I went on the hunt to find new ones. The Kidde KN-COPP-B got great reviews at a very reasonable price so I ordered 2 of them. They arrived quickly, were easy to set up and are in great working condition. I'm very happy with this purchase.
