The CO detector was installed several weeks ago, so it is really too early to know how it truly performs. I do like the small size and the low profile. It looks good compared to other CO detectors.As recommended, the detector was installed in the hallway just outside our bedroom. The display is incredibly bright. It is easy to read in the daytime and is probably sunlight readable. However, since we leave the bedroom door open, it lights up the entire bedroom at night. Now I wish I had installed it at the far end of the hallway just to reduce the light level.I did the test the CO detector and cross-test with a Silhouette smoke detector. The CO detector does alarm for fire and displays the word FIRE. The Silhouette smoke detector did not report for the CO test. It did not seem that the CO detector came out of test mode cleanly. It's not clear if I didn't do the test correctly or if the detector was stuck in a weird state. Later (and also after a power failure) everything seems normal.

One of the reasons this unit is expensive is because it is a combination CO detector and smoke detector.I would have preferred a CO detector alone because I already have a smoke detector.Another reason for the high price is the feature that allows it to communicate with other First Alert units.Since I only have one unit this feature is useless to me.First Alert does not offer a consumer friendly line of products.I also noticed that the packaging was covered in propaganda about the communication feature,but completely lacking any basic information about the specifications as a CO detector.It took three tries to get the unit installed because it kept going into some kind of fault mode and the electronic "voice" kept saying to check the instructions, which were no help. After attaching/detaching the unit and removing/inserting the batteries I finally got the unit to stay active.Every couple of weeks the unit still chirps about some kind of error and says to check the instructions,which are no help.The electronic "voice" is very hard to understand.The instruction sheet is the size of a table and cannot be easily folded for filing.The unit could not be registered due to a script/HTML error on the First Alert website.

On the plus side:

1. The included batteries were a name brand rather than something cheap from overseas.

2. The base had versatile mounting holes.

I have 4 of these smoke detectors installed in my cape cod home and it makes me feel safe. When one goes off, they all go off and the deep male voice says whether there is smoke or CO2 in the house. ONCE they went off when there was smoke in the kitchen. The rest of the time they go off, mostly in the middle of the night for some mysterious reason, saying, in the loud man's voice, "Change the batteries in the kitchen smoke detector" or "Change the batteries in the hallway smoke detector" etc etc. I currently have two of them lying on the floor with the battery drawers pulled out which stops the voice and the beep--beep--beep letting me know the batteries, which I had installed maybe 2 or 3 or 4 weeks before, are used up. The detectors are still lying on the floor days later because if I install new batteries then I will be woken up ever sooner by those batteries wearing out. Still I rate with 3 stars because these detectors make me feel safe. What's wrong with this picture? One is in sight laying on the floor as I type this. I use the brand and number of battery recommended by FirstAlert and I do not test the smoke detectors monthly because that would use up the batteries even more quickly.

I purchased three of these when they first came out--quite a few years ago--based on a Consumer Reports evaluation. I love the idea, and they were very easy to set up. We've never had one go off in an emergency, but we have been awakened a lot because the batteries have run down and we get a loud warning. The first couple times it's really heart stopping to hear an amplified voice shouting outside your bedroom. The main unit goes through batteries as often as every two weeks. Although, sometimes the batteries will last for many months. Since I always buy top end batteries with distant expiration dates, this makes no sense. Because the battery tray slides out at an odd angle, the finger-hole used to pull it out is smaller than a finger, and the plastic binds on itself, changing the battery of a device that's shouting at you in the middle of the night is no simple task. Since they are so expensive but seem to work well, I'm not sure if I want to replace them, get rid of them, or just keep burning through batteries. I know for sure that my wife is really annoyed.

I can't heat my oven above 400 degrees without it going off (and yes, my oven is clean). I need to take it down and move it into the other room whenever I cook. This unit worked reliably for a year, then started to go off, on it's own, in the middle of the night. Consistently, in the middle of the night. After a couple of weeks of troubleshooting, and waking up my two toddlers, I'm replacing with a different brand. For no particular reason, every several days the alarm would read "error" and start beeping. No, it wasn't near any source of combustion, open windows or cooking. You can only reset it so many times before realizing that you simply can't live with something like that. Out with the trash.

I have had this unit in our bedroom for over 6 months with no issues. No false alarms and no backup batter issues, it just works or at least the display tells me so. I do like the display on these units rather then just a status light like other lower priced models. If you are looking for a higher quality carbon monoxide detector then I would sure take a look at this unit. I have had other Kidde Nighthawks with no problems as well. Just remember that after a number of years all detectors are no longer good and need to be replaced.

I purchased this unit as a backup to the gas and CO detectors that are wired into my central alarm system. In the 5 months that I've had this unit installed, it has false alarmed 4 times, each time indicating explosive gas. The last one was last night with a house full of guests. The other detector sensed nothing, and after reading some reviews, I found this type of failure with Kidde alarms is very common. This beauty is headed straight for the trash.

Both 2 of these to replace my 7-year-old Kidde CO detectors of a similar model, one per floor. They plug into any wall outet. I like the battery-backup and the digital CO level display. If you press a button, you can see "peak" CO level since the last reset. Am using these peak level readings to try to track down occasional very low levels of CO that are too low to be dangerous or trigger any alarm. I am pleased with these CO detectors. My only complaint is that I wish I could see the instantaneous low level CO readings [but such pro CO detectors normally cost much more].One important point. There is something you have to do to prevent the unit from beeping every minute on battery backup if the AC power goes out. Follow the instructions to do that and you will like this unit much better as a result.

This is the first carbon monoxide detector I have ever purchased so I don't have any other experiences to compare it to. I've had it for a week and it seems to be working just fine. I really like the digital display that indicates "0" so I know that there is no carbon monoxide at all in the home. I'm assuming this is an accurate reading. (Hopefully!). It does seem like it is a quality product. I did use the test option to see if that worked and it did exactly what it was supposed to do.I did take one star off because of the ear-splitting noise you have to deal with when you put the battery in and also if you unplug the thing from the wall. I nearly jumped out of my skin! As soon as you install the battery---Be prepared for the noise!! You will want to hold the button in the back---walk it over to the wall--and plug it in immediately.I would recommend this product.

It did not work for me. Inside the box there were two (contradictory) sets of instructions on how to install the detector. One set of instructions was on a loose sheet; I tried that first; it did not work; the siren kept on going on very loudly and there was no way to make it stop. The other set of instructions was part of the instructions booklet; I tried that too; it did not work either; same problem. I surmise that the mute button was broken. Whatever the reason, I returned the product

A few weeks ago, I smelled gas in my basement, but when the utility company came with their electronic sensor, they found nothing (and they did a fairly detailed check). The next day I was still sure I was smelling something, so I bought this unit. A few days later, the unit sounded its "gas detected" alarm. Again, the utility company found no leaks with their wand-type sensor. When I called a plumber, with his soap-spray he found six leaks in my old gas line piping leading to the furnace. The moral of the story: trust your nose, and get one of these units. It detected the gas that the utility company missed (twice!).

Good price for this product. It replaces an older unit from a different company that had died and refused to stop beeping regardless of the battery that was put in it. I assume that if I do not die in my sleep from smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning, the unit works as it should. If I do die in my sleep because it failed, I'll figure out how to update this review from the great beyond. Wish me luck!

Had an alarm located near the kitchen using the ionization technology. It was driving me crazy with false alarms. I couldn't even use the toaster without the thing going into full panic, necessitating me having to leave my food preparations and charge around to silence the alarm. The unit lasted only a year...no surprise under the circumstances. While researching for a replacement I came to realize that the photoelectric technology would more likely be better for said location. Plus, I found that it was wise to use both types in the home. Since getting this alarm, I have had no false alarms while cooking and now have the satisfaction of having both types, since the ionization ones are in other areas of the home. Now, if this one just works when there is a true kitchen alert needed, I'm all set.

We had the model before this one, and shortly after getting it as a gift, it went off.. we were groggy and we barley got out. When the fire department got there it was clear, it saved our lives!! GET ONE!! GET TWO!! (One Battery, One electric!!) Have fire alarms in EVERY ROOM.. But what worried me, is would any alarm actually wake up the kids!! (test yours deep in the night at least once, to see if it will.. This one is loud & clear!) Still, put one closer to hear it better in your sleep!! (Remember they have to be up at a certain height, so read the instructions!!) Have a plan with an uncluttered exit. Carbon Monixide is colorless and odorless, but you are just as disoriented with high levels as waking up in smoke. Protect yourself & your home.. Have extinguishers, and alarms, and keep your phone & keys shoes & coats where you can grab them in an emergency..

I'm writing this because I have to find out why our old model is suddenly reading 7 .. We got in in late 1995, and it is time for a newer model. I will be watching the levels tonight. This is a reminder that the furnace is overdue for a cleaning as well as the chimney! If you have a wood stove, or oil furnace, You NEED one of these!! It once went off when a generator running a water pump was too close to the basement door and the fumes came upstairs, 2 hours later!! Thanks for reading.

This unit has worked for 9 years flawlessly. That's an excellent life for these devices - they probably should be replaced more often, but this one has tested fine and served continuously without problems. I'm happy to be investing in the newer unit (the Kidde 900-0076). This one finally announced it's need to be replaced by giving the malfunction error indication - as it should.

I have the exact same experience as the previous reviewer. The unit quit working after a year or so. It had Err in the LCD. I called warranty service and the Indian tech support guy was quite friendly and agreed to replace it at $6.5 for shipping and processing. They only take check or money order only because their credit card system is down. It seems that the credit card system has been down forever and they never bother to fix it.The quality of this product is questionable since there are so many failures. Try to avoid it at all costs.

My also failed in less than a year - It now constantly beeps and indicates 'err' on the display.I didn't have my original receipt (I didn't buy it from Amazon), but I decided to call first alert warranty services anyway (1-800-323-9005). The very friendly CSR told me that the 'err' display indicates the sensor has failed and the unit will need to be replaced. She gathered my shipping info and some info about the unit and offered to send a replacement for $6.50 to cover S&H, and I would need to mail a check or money order since their credit-card system was down.I'm going to send in the check. I'm hoping they've addressed the quality issues, and the new unit will last longer.

This CO detector seemed fine until we got an Air Hog remote controlled helicopter which set the detector off. Next we got a Vizio HD TV and just turning the TV on caused the detector to activate it's alarm. This thing was a waste of money. If you're in the market for a carbon monoxide detector, look elsewhere.

I purchased this First Alert Carbon Monoxide Alarm as well as a NON-digital First Alert carbon monoxide alarm. I bought them on the same day.This alarm has gone off SEVERAL times, and it says to EVACUATE as well as states that the CO level is "400 PPM". I was sure my gas-line on my dryer was the culprit, so I stopped using the dryer for a week. I also put the non-digital alarm next to this one. STILL, the digital alarm will go off and yet the other one is silent (does not alarm). I also looked up and discovered others have experienced false alarms. This alarm was purchased in January, 2009, so it is new.Stay away from this product!

I am neutral on this product. I hope it works. I bought the 10-year battery from Amazon although it comes with a battery and I tested it. I won't know if it works until I actually have carbon monoxide enter my house. I hope that doesn't happen, but according to the test button its up and running.

I always seem to hear just about how much of a importance it really is just to get a carbon monoxide alarm, as much as a simple smoke alarm. Now that it has been a law in New York City, there is nothing else you can do buy get one. It is just the safest you have from losing your own life. Yet, with all the ones that I chose, I bought the First Alert FCD3N model from my landlord. It is very simple, and very easy to use. It really isn't all that hard to operate at all. My only one problem, is that some of the information that was written on the alarm actually wasn't in easy to read letters. Instead, it was just written in the same image as the carbon monoxide alarm. Nevertheles, I honestly suggest you buy this alarm. It really is a must-have for every household.

"Get a detector, but not from First Alert..." 2004-05-17

I think every home should have a CO detector in it.
Having said that, avoid this one and any others from First Alert. I bought an expensive one from them, and it gave a constant scream. The silence button did not work. Customer service would only say it shouldn't do that. Someone suggested that it might need to 'burn-in' for a few minutes. So I sealed in a room surrounded by blankets to keep the noise down, and it could still be heard a block away four hours later.
The store I bought it at exchanged it for this model, but the problems are just as bad. And again, no help at all from customer service. I have had my house checked and there are minimal levels of CO, but these detectors keep going off and deafening everyone around.

True - this has been "evaulated" by the EPA. You can NOT use them in a real estate transactions. You can't even sell these in some states. So beware, you are not getting a $4000 Radon Measurement device for $120. You are getting a device that I think is probably good for a homeowner. Eleven dollar charcoal canisters are approved for real estate transactions.

I live in an area that is at "medium" risk for Radon. Since we live in a berm home, I was always worried that Radon could be a problem for my family. I bought this within 48 hours it assured me that our home was safe from Radon gas. I have lived in quite a few different places over the years, one thing i noticed over time is any place i move to that has a First Alert detector, i ended up replacing within a week or so with my own due to the fact it constantly giving false alarm or not working at all, while apartments that has a kidde detector, i never have to do anything just changing the battery every 6 months.To summarize, avoid first alert, get a kidde.

I bought this product to check for a suspected CO leak in a gas fireplace -- I wanted to know just how much CO was in the air, instead of a basic alarm. As soon as I turned on the product, even in fresh air, it said the CO level was 80 and the alarm sounded. Maybe this was an isolated problem, I would assume as much anyone, but regardless, status = 1 defective unit, returned.

It seems to have worked ok...as far as I can tell.It was manufactured in Jan 2005 and it is about Jan 2010 and it is defective. It will no longer self test and throws off random chirps which indicate that it is not functioning properly.So, $35 for 5 years (or not..as I don't know exactly when it failed)that is $7 per year.What is it worth to you?Is there a better option on the market?I am going to purchase a new one from Amazon but not before I check for a more robust unit.

I bought these for two old homes. I have to take them all back. The major flaw in the design is that the button in the back must be push ALL THE WAY in when the unit is plugged in or the no power warning alarm will go off CONSTANTLY until it is plugged back in. If you have an old house that has older outlets that do not hold the plug in very TIGHTLY these will not work and the alarm will go off constantly thinking the unit is unplugged. You also have to make sure that the area behind and around the plug is rigid and flat. The unit is quite large. In order to deactivate the alarm you have to tamper with it and mess with the battery (not easy in the design). If you hit it or move it the alarm goes off. Just annoying.

This is the LOUDEST alarm I have ever heard. It has to be damaging to hearing. I wonder what happens if you are not at home and the power goes out. Does the alarm sound the entire time until the power comes back on? I would hate to leave my pets home with an alarm like that going off around them. I decided it was just easier to buy a long life battery operated detector which can last up to ten years. Bad design and a stressful experience.

Had this for about a year until this morning, when the alarm went off. I have a second unit from another manufacture that I placed in the same area as the Kidde and it didn't go off. Called Kidde support, and was on hold, their website had a section on what my alarm was and it said exit the house and call the fire department. I did (to be safe, I have a family), and they tested the house and found nothing. Not buying a Kidde again. If anything, only get a detector that has a digital read-out.So if you want a great surprise someday and think that your house has carbon monoxide, font get this!

I have three of these in my house, and am very happy with them. All CO detectors have a limited life, but these tell you when their life is expired, like a smoke detector beeping when the battery is low.Another reviewer complains about his beeping every five minutes, but the manual explains this is the signal that its useful life is expired (about five years). While waiting for a replacement, as I am doing now for one of my detectors, you can silence the alarm for about 36 hours at a time, by pressing the test button until it beeps.

No one can tell me of the product is working or not. There is no test. Last night it started going off for no reason every 5 minutes. It took me almost 2 hours to figure out it was this and not one of the 10 smoke detectors in my house. I finally had to disconnect it and now I cant arm the alarm in the house till my alarm company comes out today to replace this piece of crap. ADT charged $200 for this thing, at least my new company will replace it at no charge.

I bought this as a replacement for the original in my travel trailer. It was easy to install and in less than 5 minutes was up and working. The manual that came with the detector explained everything clearly. I would recommend this product highly.It comes with a 3 year warranty, which is very nice, since the original that failed only had a one year warranty.

One problem that I have had with "other" Carbon Monoxide detectors in the past, is that the lithium battery starts to fail after a year. The battery here is supposed to last up to five years. I really like the way this ProTech 7035-SL Lithium Powered Carbon Monoxide Detectors with Digital Readout and Locked Battery Compartment works. The old one that had from a different manufacturer had a battery that constantly failed and the indicator was not clear. The digital readout is much better then the flashing light. This new lithium powered one provides a better sense of security and comfort because the digital reading is clear and specific and much better then the light flashing so its been a worthwhile switch to me.

I ordered this LP Detector to replace my original LP detector in my RV.The original was a flush mount CCI Controls PreTell 22 Model # 7770.2. NOTE: There is a large number of CCI LP detectors failing after 4 or 5 years and the company is out of business now. The MTI LP detector mounts just fine in the hole left by the CCI detector. The MTI is slightly shorter then the CCI LP detector but I was able to mount the MTI in the same space with only a slight gap at one end, not really noticeable as my detector is mounted close to the floor.

The MTI detector seems to work just as designed. As a side note, most of the new RV's seem to be using the MTI LP detector.

I bought 2 of these and 1 of them is a menace, always going off in the middle of the night and we can't shut it off. So, we keep it outside in the garage but it still goes off sometimes. The other one is not going off for no reason, but if it gets bumped out of the outlet- the shrill is relentless and it is not easy to reset. The directions are on the back of this thing, but you have to sit through the shrilling beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppp while you read the instructions. It's enough to drive a person CRAZY. Babies are screaming, pets are running. It's unnecessarily loud.

Amazon tells you the same thing. THIS THING IS LOUD. So if you want a CO Alarm that is quiet do not buy this one. It is also made Tamper Resistant for places, like a hotel, where you do not want the unit ripped off. So if you are going to move your CO Alarm around do not buy this one.

I wanted a LOUD CO Alarm that is going to get me out of the house and tell me IF someone or something messed with it. So I bought this one.

After getting this product we installed it close to the garage. Installation is very easy, just install battery and plug in.....

After a few months the alarm woke us from a sound sleep in the middle of the night. Good thing the alarm is very loud because my wife and I sleep very hard and the bedroom is a distance away from the alarm.

We thought the alarm was defective but asked our fire fighter neighbor to check our home with his "high end" CO level detector.

Turns out our hot water heater was leaking CO.

I also found out the Kidde CO Alarms are UL list and other brands are not. Google "UL listing" if you are too young to know about UL product testing.

I really like this CO Detector. Don't confuse this with a model that only works on battery power or A/C power. This one runs on A/C power until your power goes out and then runs on battery power. This is necessary. Say your power goes out and someone stupidly turns on a gas heater in your house. The detector will go off when the CO level rises. If your detector only runs on A/C power, you'd be toast. For your sake and your kids sake, by a CO detector that runs on both A/C and battery power. I've had this for a year with no problems.

Bought this alarm in spring 2007. Manufacture date printed on back says 2007 Feb 07. Have had two sets of batteries in it in the time we owned it and recently it started beeping three "chirps" per minute. Checked the back and that means replace alarm... already?

Plugs into the wall, yet will not work without the batteries. Overall pretty disappointed. Previously used a NightHawk carbon monoxide detector. Nearly the same price and nice digital readout. Works off outlet. Unfortunately can't find that quality and price now that CO detectors are required by local code.

As hard as I tried to find the "sensitivity levels" of this unit, no where in the product info or even the packaging does it indicate at what levels the alarm sounds. The only place I could find any info on that at all was on the back of the actual unit in small letters. This alarm will sound within 15 minutes of a 400ppm reading... this is actually well above lethal levels of CO! A good detector should sound at readings of about 70ppm, even better at 30ppm. Levels of 90ppm+ can render someone unconcious, so at levels of 400ppm you wouldn't even be able to hear the alarm as you will likely already be unconscious if not dead!

Invest a little more and get a lot better unit.

As happened to some of the other reviewers, the battery door on this detector broke the first time I opened it. I decided to give it a chance anyway and installed the batteries. The next day it randomly "alerted" me to high Carbon Monoxide levels. I silenced the alarm and then pushed the button to find out the "Peak Level" so that I would know why the alarm went off. It stayed at 0. Needless to say, I returned this. I ended up buying a Kidde brand detector (which I decided on after much research).

"Failed out of the box. Not a trustworthy brand." 2008-10-19

I bought this along with the cheaper First Alert CO400 model to replace two Kidde-brand models which had died within two years of purchase. I figured a different brand had to be better, right?

No.
I put in fresh batteries, and its fancy LCD panel displayed random meaningless lines rather than letters or numbers (similar to the way the Kidde models had failed, in fact), and refused to be reset to a sane state no matter what I did (and I tried everything).

The other cheaper model was no better -- it one started making a squealing noise, somewhere between a proper alarm and a sick baby. Something was clearly not right, and again no amount of pushing buttons or changing batteries would help.

I don't know about you, but that's all the chances I'm willing to give First Alert. If the two I got were so broken out of the box, how can I possibly trust any replacement?

So I don't know what I'm going to get, but it won't be from either First Alert or Kidde.

"Not compliant with any current UL safety standard" 2010-03-03

I was disappointed to find that this U.S. manufacturer is actually

selling gas alarms that don't address current safety standards.

Specifically, I found that the product manual does not say it is

UL-listed for any relevant Underwriters Laboratories standards, and

when I checked the UL product database I could not find listings for

this product for either explosive gas (UL 1484) or carbon monoxide (UL

2034).

In the case of explosive gas (UL 1484), this product is not UL-listed

though it appears to be compliant in the loose sense that it alarms at

the standard set point of 25% LEL. While other products in this

product line are UL-listed, this one is not, suggesting that the

manufacturer simply doesn't care enough to pay for the appropriate

testing/listing for all of their products.

In the case of carbon monoxide (UL 2034), this product is not

UL-listed and indeed has definitely NOT been compliant with UL

standards for over a decade. The original standard (UL 2034-1992)

specified CO alarm set points at 100ppm(90min), 200ppm(35min), and

400ppm(15min) and these are indeed the alarm points listed in the

product manual (which is dated 1996). In 1998, UL updated the CO

alarm set points to 70ppm(240min), 150ppm(50min), and 400ppm(15min).

But the manual says quite clearly: "This detector has not been

investigated for carbon monoxide detection below 100ppm."

Given the note about calibration that is also contained in the product

manual ("CO sensor calibrated at 200ppm CO specific to avoid false

alarms") one gets the sense that this is a product for people who care

about buying products that won't wake them up with false alarms as

opposed to people who care about safety standards of the current

century. The similar Kidde and First Alert products are UL-listed and

people complain about more false alarms. You pays your money and you

takes your choice.

This unit beats doing a paper test and then forgetting to do it. You just glance at it whenever and it tells you what level you're at. We did a disposable test before we bought our home and it was about 12ppm. I needed to do a long term test so I got the electronic test. Works great! We have 13ppm in the middle of summer with windows open in our basement. We are getting mitigation put in later this month. Then I can watch it and see if it is working.

After 10 months of use, the Safety Siren sounded an alarm at 10PM. My renter called the HVAC guy and demanded immediate service on the apparent gas leak. After hours of careful inspection, no leaks found. What was found though was a continuously running sump pump that likely would soon fail. One can speculate that there was a connection between the sump pump problem and the alarm sounding. A new detector and sump pump were installed.

I had the "other brand"- it gave false alarms. I purchased this Safety Siren unit and have had no false alarms ever for the months that I've owned it. I can't attest to its performance when there are elevated gas levels and I hope I don't need to find out. I recommend this model Safety Siren.

I have a propane furnace. I have read many reviews about this Gas Detector and was a little skeptical about buying it. I bought it about 6 months ago and have loved it. It has never had a problem. I did spray the house once using Lysol and the alarm went off. Good to see that it works on a variety of different gases. Would recommend to anyone! I give the alarm a full 5 stars.

This is our second combustible gas detector. We added this one when we installed a second gas-log fireplace in the new room. These units work well, especially for propane which can collect along the floors and low places in the home. Most outlets are placed perfectly for detecting it. No wiring, no installation. Just plug it in and it starts working.

The instructions are very good and easy to read and follow.

I tested the unit by using an extension cord and placing it in the firebox while I pushed in on the pilot light valve. The unit triggered right away so it takes very little gas to set it off. The unit also has a test button so you don't have to do this. (I just wanted to see if propane would really set it off. Not that I don't trust test buttons, but real gas is better than a test button in my mind.) Most LP vendors will test your detectors for free with a spray can of propane. (This is the way we had the first detector tested.)

The alarm on this unit is a little louder than on our older one but still not as loud as I would like. We can hear it from anywhere in the house so it will work. In any case, I believe it is loud enough to wake me up if I was sleeping. Still, I wouldn't mind a louder alarm.

There is a blinking indicator light so you can tell the unit is working.

Neither unit has triggered falsely. And we have had no leaks but I feel safer with the detectors.

For the price I don't think you can find a better unit, and certainly not find one easier to install.

I moved into a new house that had been built about a year before. For the past 17 months I have been changing batteries very often in my three CO detectors. I finally started putting dates on the batteries and found that they only last 2 months (1 month in a cold basement). I'm guessing I spent about $70 in batteries. The batteries are only there to kick in when the AC power fails, which it rarely does and never for very long. However, my tests indicate that the batteries are being drained while the AC power is properly working.

I contacted the company for warranty replacements and was told I would have to pay $20 for shipping & HANDLING to get my "FREE" warranty replacements. I made a big stink and got them to send them at their expense. Only time will tell if the replacements work. Till then I can work on the problem of random beeps from my BRK smoke detectors.

I recently read that 10 years is about the life of a smoke detector. I just passed my tenth anniversary in my home that I remodeled. So time for a redo of all my hard Wired detectors. They were by BRK so it was easy to get these and replace them. I replaced the old yellowing base mounts so now they're all white and clean. I changed out one smoke detector with this CO detector as it was 6 feet from another smoke detector. Plug 'n Play. It was an easy switch out and they all worked well. The old ones worked great for ten years. I hope they never really have to do their job, but I feel like they will just fine. I test them periodically.

We bought this CO Alarm after we had a CO incident. Our neighbor is a fire fighter and recommended a unit with a digital display.This unit was out of the box and in use in about 5 minutes.All Kidde CO Alarms are UL Listed and other brands are not. Google "UL Listing" to find out more about this established testing lab. Some states mandate consumers have UL Listed smoke and CO Alarms. Retailers can sell non-UL Listed products so watch your state codes or you may be liable.

We bought this alarm about one and a half years ago. For a while we had no problems at all. It even detected a leak when the line that supplied the gas to our stove cracked. Then we started getting false GAS alarms in the early morning hours. They would happen about 3-4 times a week. After a thorough inspection, we felt certain that these alarms were indeed false. I called KIDDE after reading this suggestion from other reviews. The customer service rep, Kathryn, was very helpful, professional and concerned. She sent us a replacement within 10 days, and we mailed the defective unit back to her for inspection.

Almost all products can have defects, but very few companies actually respond in a professional, quick manner. There is no better alarm out there, and Kidde has proven to be a responsible company.

It's garbage. I have two of these and they randomly give false alarms. They're absolutely false alarms since I keep them close (since they're useless anyway) and only one will go off (usually in the middle of the night). I'd heard Nighthawk was the best. This unit is a joke. Buy anything else or simply flush $60 down the toilet for the same result.

... cannot use hair spray, spray cleaner near this. I rarely use hairspray, but on those occasions I do, I either have to go down to the garage (3 flights) or close the door of the bedroom that is on the same level as the alarm and spray my hair at the window. Normally I could live with this, but my dog is sometimes alone and this thing really freaks her out when we ARE home with her and the thing goes off.

I own this detector for 1 1/2 years before I have to replace batteries. You don't realize how convenient it is to have the battery compartment at the front until you start replacing batteries of the existing smoke and carbon mono detectors in your house. Most of those installed in our house needs 9 volts rectangular batteries which are not easy to find and expensive. This needs 3 regular size "AA" batteries. We also have high ceilings, so I have to use higher stools or ladder to replace them. The battery access is at the back so I need to remove the unit from the ceiling first. It is easy to remove them with a single twist, but once you replace the battery, re-installing them is a nightmare. This unit saves you a lot of frustration and heartaches because you don't have to remove it at all and all you need to do is flip the front battery cover and you are done.Instruction is attached to the back, so you don't have to worry about losing them. 4 quick beeps signal an alarm condition. Single beep every 30 seconds indicate low battery.Simple design. Looks good.

We have had three of these units for less than six months. We also have two other CO units that are AC only that we have had for a few years.Just about every week one of these three units beeps very loudly for three or four beeps and then quits. This is very annoying when you are sleeping. It does not continue like it is a real alarm. They are not the soft chirps indicating low batteries. I have replaced all the batteries with new quality batteries instead of the cheap ones that come with the unit. Our regular, more expensive, CO units have never gone off at the same time as these cheap units. Buy the more expensive units.We do not think these are unsafe, just annoying.

I've used several carbon monoxide alarms from First Alert for the past couple of years. Sadly, I was very dissapointed with the fact that they've shorted out after only a few months. For Kidde, they've made high quality carbon monoxide alarms, but also a very convient prices. The Kidde KN-COBB Basic Carbin Monoxide Alarm is a very simple and easy to setup alarm. This alrm is very affordable, and you can easily hang it up, without any problems. It is also easy to install the batteries, unlike those that require a 9 Volt batteries. Here, all it takes is a trio of AA batteries, and it works better, even during a power outage. Kidde does show it, and I really suggest you have one for your everyday houselhold.

Easy to install without wiring, the 120-volt AC-powered CD-9590 plugs directly into any standard (unswitched) electrical outlet. CO alarms should be placed on every level of your home and outside bedrooms, but be sure they are not in areas where they can be accidentally disconnected or unplugged by children. For your safety, check that alarms can be heard in all sleeping areas and install them a minimum of five feet away from any fuel-burning appliance.
Battery Backup for Continuous Operation
Thanks to a secure nine-volt, super heavy-duty backup battery (included), the CD-9590 works continuously, even in the event of a power outage. A fresh battery should last for one year under normal operating conditions. And changing the battery could not be easier: simply pull out the front-load battery drawer--the drawer will not close until a nine-volt battery is installed. Once your battery is ready, press the test/reset button to ensure that the alarm is operating properly and then test the alarm weekly thereafter.
No Costly Sensor Replacement
Three LEDs located right on the front of the alarm make it easy to identify the alarm condition, saving you the cost of replacing expensive sensor equipment. A flashing bright red signal, which is accompanied by an audible alarm, indicates a dangerous level of CO. The green LED indicates AC power is present, and the yellow LED indicates that it's time for the alarm to be replaced. In addition, this alarm features a low-battery warning signal which will sound for at least seven days.
What's more, two self-adhesive labels are provided with this alarm. They contain instructions indicating what to do if the alarm sounds. Add phone numbers for emergency responders and a qualified technician to each label, then place one label near the CO alarm and the other in the "fresh-air" location you will use as a gathering place if the alarm sounds.
The CD-9590 is backed by a five-year limited warranty. This alarm is UL listed to standard 2034 and meets product specification guidelines for jurisdictions requiring CO alarms.

I had installed it in the basement about 20ft away from the gas heating furnace. It was installed about a month ago I have had no false alarm so far. Smoke and Co alarm in that area gives me a great sense of protection.

I purchased this product, ensured the battery backup was working, tested the alarm, then placed it directly on top of a gas stove, while gas was running with no flame for several minutes. There was alarm whatsoever regarding explosive gas.If it does not go off when virtually immersed in "explosive gas", it is more dangerous to have this item than to have no detector at all, since it simply lulls you into a false since of security.

This is the worst $50 I've ever spent. I HATE this alarm. Although it's plugged into the wall, you also have to install a 9 volt battery. Most devices that have a battery back up don't drain the battery while the unit is plugged in. Not this alarm! I probably go through 3-4 9 volt batteries each winter. And if the battery starts to lose it's charge, or you dare to leave the battery out, the alarm beeps every few minutes.Another important thing to note about this alarm... although it can detect carbon monoxide and natural gas, you're supposed to mount the device at different heights depending on the gas you're trying to detect. In other words, it does'nt really serve it's dual purpose.Although I've already lost the $50, I'll be buying a different alarm for this season. I can't take dealing with its battery problems anymore.

I chose this product because I wanted to have a battery back up for the alarm in case of an electrical failure. I was surprised that the battery that came with the product had expired before the date of manufacture of the product. Also, the door on the unit does not completely line up in order to completely close. When I called about these two issues, they did not offer to send another battery and told me as long as the door goes down, it's good enough. So, I guess the only thing I should be concerned with is that the alarm works when necessary -- and, hopefully, it will.

How it Works - The 3-12 month Alpha Track radon test kit is a diffusion-based track detector. The current improved design filters out dust and radon progeny through a structural filter that is an integral part of the housing, resulting in increased sturdiness. The housing is injection molded from electrically conducting plastic in order to minimize electrical charge effects from the positively charged radon progeny generated inside the detector. The hemispherical base is designed to maximize sensitivity and create a more uniform track distribution for better counting statistics.

The track detector foil inside the housing is from dosimetry-grade CR-39 cast specifically for our Laboratory. The sheets of CR-39 are laser cut and engraved with a unique batch number. Each batch is calibrated and receives its own calibration factor. All sheets are also checked for background tracks.

Accustar Labs is the only Radon Testing Lab in the United States to use electrochemical etching to process its alpha track foils which are subsequently counted with computer-aided image analysis equipment. This kind of system was found superior to chemically etched alpha track radon testing.

I just purchased this item from Amazon.com. Shipped quickly. First it is really small sized (prpbably no more than a couple inches). Although it looks kind of big in the pictures. The instructions say it can be used for 3- 12 months (long range radon detection!! a plus). However it has to be shipped back to the company where it is analysed. They do send a prepaid first class mailing envelope but take no responsibility for lost in transit. recommend sending it back express mail to ensure delivery (another $15 !!). I will report again once I get the results back. It says NOT VALID in New Jersey.

I've been studying this technology, and there appear to be too many choices in how to test for radon in homes. But Consumer Reports did a thorough job of evaluating the products on the market, in their September 2008 issue. (Their conclusions can be found online.) They highly rated two products. This one was their preferred choice, as a 90-day test, such as this one, is more accurate than a quick test. This particular product got their best rating. The other product is called RTCA 4-Pass Charcoal Cannister, which is a 2-7 day test. Oddly, Amazon does not carry that item. CR says that one sells for about $20. (Please note that I have not actually used this product yet. I'm merely sharing the results of credible research. It took me awhile to sort through the verbiage on this issue.
